Food Sovereignty is defined as: “The right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems.”
Food sovereignty is the idea that people have the right to sufficient, healthy, and culturally appropriate food, and that food should not be treated simply as a commodity. It emphasizes supporting farmers, fishers, and other food providers by protecting their livelihoods and recognizing their contributions. Food sovereignty prioritizes local food systems that connect producers and consumers, giving communities control over land, water, seeds, livestock, and other resources. It also values local knowledge and skills for managing food production and promotes sustainable practices that work with nature to strengthen ecosystems and build resilience.
